Stickman Example

Step One:

Building up the library pallette with graphics

• draw a stick man
• select the best arm: hold Cntl and click on each part of the arm
• Edit > Cut the arm
• go to the menu and select Insert > New Symbol...
• a Create New Symbol window will appear
• click on the radio button called Graphic
• beside Name, label it “arm”
• click OK
• Edit > Paste the arm
• select the best leg
• Edit > Cut the leg
• go to the menu and select Insert > New Symbol...
• click on the radio button called Graphic
• beside Name, label it “leg”
• Edit > Paste the leg
• select the torso which consists of the head and body
• Edit > Cut the torso
• go to the menu and select Insert > New Symbol...
• click on the radio button called Graphic
• beside Name, label it “torso”
• Edit > Paste the torso

Step Two: 

Assembling the stick man from the library pallette
• bring up the library window: go to the menu and select Window > Library or press F11
• go to the menu and select Insert > New Symbol...
• a Create New Symbol window will appear
• call it running stick man
• click on the radio button called Movie
• click OK
• insert 4 additional layers: go to the menu and select Insert > Layers for a total of 5 layers
• rename each layer: double click on the layer name 
• call layer one torso, layer two arm1, layer three arm2, layer four leg1, layer five leg2
• on the torso layer, click on the first keyframe
• drag the torso graphic from the library onto the stage (the white space where you
illustrate)
• to move the torso into position, use the mouse to click on it and move it
• on the arm1 layer, click on the first keyframe• drag the arm graphic from the library onto the stage
• right click on the arm, select Free Transform
• the pivot point will appear: it appears like a circle in the centre of the graphic
• move the pivot point to the top of the arm
• rotate the arm into position: put your mouse outside of the bounding box and a circle with
and arrow will appear
• move the arm into position: click on the graphic to move it
• you can nudge the arm into position by using the arrow keys on the keyboard
• repeat the above steps putting the arm graphic onto the arm2 layer
• put the leg graphic onto the leg1 layer
• put the leg graphic onto the leg2 layer

Step Three: 

Animating the limbs
• select the torso layer by clicking on it
• right click on frame 10 and select Insert Frame
• Side note: the torso does not move so you don’t have to animate it!
• select the arm1 layer by clicking on it
• right click on frame 5 and select Insert Keyframe
• right click on the arm and select Free Transform
• swing the arm back
• while pressing the Shift button, click on keyframe 1 and keyframe 5
• right click and select Create Classic Tween
• right click on keyframe 10 and select Insert Keyframe
• swing the arm back to the original position
• Repeat above steps with arm2, leg1 and leg2

Step Four: 

Bring the running stick man movie into the scene
• make sure you are in the scene: click on Scene 1
• make sure the library pallette is open: go to the menu and select Window > Library or
press F11
• click on the first keyframe of the first layer
• click on the running stick man movie in the library and drag it onto the stage (ie. the
window where you do all your animations)

    PLEASE NOTE: IF YOU ARE USING CS4: the motion guide is inserted by right clicking your layer and selecting "classic motion guide", this is different then the instructions

• the only difference here is that you use the running stick man instead of a ball

Please note that you will not see the stick man mvoing/running unless you render the animation by pressing
Ctrl and Enter
