Computer Component Notes

Input/Output

Ø      I/O port = input/output (I=on, O=off)

Ø      Cables connected to comp via USB, firewire, etc.

Ø      A hardware device with the ability to accept inputted, outputted or other processed data

Ø      Can obtain respective media data as input sent to a computer, or send computer data to storage media as storage output

Ø      Ways of people communicating with the computer and the computer communicating with the user

·        Input Devices: provide input to a computer

·        Output Devices: provide means for computers to output data for communication with users or other users

·        I/O device: both functionalities

·        Inputs are signals sent by the user to the system

·        Outputs are signals sent from the system to the user

·        Some input devices: Mouse, keyboard, scanner, etc.

·        Some output devices: Monitor, Printer, speakers, etc.

·        Modems and network cards are considered both input and output

I/O devices categorized under storage and communication

§         Examples of storage I/O devices: CD/DVD drives,  USB flash drives,  Hard disk drives

§         Examples of communication I/O devices: Network adaptors, Bluetooth adaptors/dongles, Modems

GA cable is used to connect the monitor into the system

  • The VGA cable is used to connect the monitor into the system
  •  USB cables are used to connect the mouse and keyboard
  • An I/O algorithm is one designed to exploit locality and perform efficiently when data reside on secondary storage, such as a disk drive. An I/O algorithm is one designed to exploit locality and perform efficiently when data reside on secondary storage, such as a disk drive
  • Older keyboards are connected to the computer with a purple cable
